Today we will be using the Mixer Brush in Photoshop CS5 to turn an ordinary photo to a genuine-looking painting. It's a very versatile tool capable of awesome effects. Here's what we'll be making:

Let's begin. I'm starting with a standard portrait of a girl:

Now go to the Mixer Brush and select a soft round brush and set the settings to the ones below:
Your picture should turn out something like the one below.
__________________________________________________
Brush over the general area of her face to smoothen it out. Make sure to change the size of your brush when necessary.

Let's work on the eyes. Take the 'Spatter' brush and zoom into one of her eyes. Brush in the general directions of the shadows and highlights. With the pupils, basically you want to smudge it in a circular motion. The picture below is how mine turned out:
Do the same for the other eye.

Now for the nose. Do the same thing that you did for the eyes. Remember, don't overdo it. As usual, change the size and flow when needed.

And do the lips and the ears in the same fashion.

For the hair, I used the Spatter brush at 100px. Start from the top of the direction the strands are facing and move towards the roots. After that change it to 40px and adjust it at the roots.

And now go to Filter > Brushstrokes > Crosshatch. Change the settings following the picture below.

Your picture should turn out something like the one below.
Feel free to make any changes to it such as color correction and such...

I hope you have enjoyed this free Photoshop tutorial. The mixer brush is an excellent tool for any aspiring digital artist. Cheers.
